Jaritāri said: "The intelligent man stays awake before difficult times. When the difficult time arrives, there is no suffering at all.
जरीतारी ने कहा: "बुद्धिमान व्यक्ति कठिन समय से पहले जागता रहता है। जब कठिन समय आता है, तो कोई कष्ट नहीं होता है।"

But he who is not intelligent and is not sensible knows nothing and suffers because of difficulties when a difficult time arrives."
परन्तु जो बुद्धिमान नहीं है और समझदार नहीं है वह कुछ नहीं जानता और कठिन समय आने पर कठिनाइयों से पीड़ित होता है।”

सारिसृक्व उवाच धीरस्त्वमसि मेधावी प्राणकृच्छ्रमिदं च नः शूरः प्राज्ञो बहूनां हि भवत्येको न संशयः
Sarisrikva said: "You are implacable and intelligent. The time has come when our lives are endangered. There is no doubt that only one among many is wise and brave."
सरिस्रिकवा ने कहा: "आप अटल और बुद्धिमान हैं। समय आ गया है जब हमारा जीवन खतरे में है। इसमें कोई संदेह नहीं है कि कई लोगों में से केवल एक ही बुद्धिमान और बहादुर है।"
Stambamitra said: "The eldest is the protector, because the eldest saves in times of difficulty. If the eldest one does not know, what can the younger ones do?"
स्तंभमित्र ने कहा: "सबसे बड़ा रक्षक है, क्योंकि सबसे बड़ा मुश्किल के समय बचाता है। यदि सबसे बड़ा नहीं जानता, तो छोटे क्या कर सकते हैं?"
Droṇa said: "The one with the golden seed is swiftly advancing towards our abode in flames. The seven tongues of the fire are lean and are eagerly licking."
द्रोण ने कहा: "स्वर्ण बीज वाला व्यक्ति तेजी से आग की लपटों में हमारे निवास की ओर बढ़ रहा है। अग्नि की सातों जीभें दुबली हैं और उत्सुकता से चाट रही हैं।"
Vaiśampāyana said: At these words of his brother, Jaritāri folded his hands on his forehead in salutation. O king! Listen to the way he praised the fire.
वैशम्पायन ने कहा: अपने भाई के इन शब्दों पर, जरीतारि ने अभिवादन में अपने हाथ उसके माथे पर जोड़ दिए। हे राजा! सुनिए उन्होंने किस प्रकार अग्नि की स्तुति की।
Jaritāri said: "You are the soul of the wind, the purifier. You are the body of the creepers. O virile one! You are the source of the water. The water is also your source.
जरीतारी ने कहा: "आप वायु की आत्मा हैं, शुद्ध करने वाले हैं। आप लताओं के शरीर हैं। हे वीर! आप जल के स्रोत हैं। जल भी आपका स्रोत है।
O most powerful one! Your flames are like the rays of the sun and they go above and below, and on every side."
हे परम शक्तिशाली! आपकी लपटें सूर्य की किरणों की तरह हैं और वे ऊपर, नीचे, और हर तरफ जाती हैं।"

सारिसृक्व उवाच माता प्रपन्ना पितरं न विद्मः; पक्षाश्च नो न प्रजाताब्जकेतो न नस्त्राता विद्यतेऽग्ने त्वदन्य;स्तस्माद्धि नः परिरक्षैकवीर
Sarisrikva said: "O you with the clouds in your banner! Our mother has ignored us and we do not know our father. Our wings have still not grown. O Agni! We have no protector but for you. You are the only hero and, therefore, protect us.
सरिस्रिकवा ने कहा: "हे अपने ध्वज में बादलों के साथ! हमारी मां ने हमें नजरअंदाज कर दिया है और हम अपने पिता को नहीं जानते हैं। हमारे पंख अभी भी विकसित नहीं हुए हैं। हे अग्नि! हमारे पास आपके अलावा कोई रक्षक नहीं है। आप एकमात्र नायक हैं और इसलिए, हमारी रक्षा करें।"

यदग्ने ते शिवं रूपं ये च ते सप्त हेतयः तेन नः परिरक्षाद्य ईडितः शरणैषिणः
O Agni! We are seeking refuge with you. In your benevolent form and in your seven flames, therefore, protect us.
हे अग्नि! हम आपकी पनाह मांग रहे हैं। इसलिए, अपने दयालु रूप में और अपनी सात ज्वालाओं में, हमारी रक्षा करें।
O Jātaveda! You alone are the one that heats. O god! You alone are the one who heats the heavens. O bearer of sacrificial offerings! Protect us young riṣi-s today and bypass this place."
हे जातवेद! तू ही तो है जो तपाता है। रब्बा बे! आप ही हैं जो स्वर्ग को तपाते हैं। हे यज्ञ-प्रसाद के वाहक! आज हम युवा ऋषियों की रक्षा करें और इस स्थान से बचें।"
Stambamitra said: "O Agni! You alone are everything. The entire universe is established in you. You sustain all beings and you hold up everything that exists.
स्तंभमित्र ने कहा: "हे अग्नि! आप अकेले ही सब कुछ हैं। संपूर्ण ब्रह्मांड आप में स्थापित है। आप सभी प्राणियों का पालन-पोषण करते हैं और जो कुछ भी अस्तित्व में है उसे धारण करते हैं।
O Agni! You are the bearer of all sacrificial offerings. You alone are the supreme sacrificial offering. The learned ones offer sacrifices to you, knowing you to be one and many.
हे अग्नि! आप समस्त यज्ञों के वाहक हैं। आप ही परम यज्ञ हैं। विद्वान लोग आपको एक तथा अनेक जानकर आपके लिये यज्ञ करते हैं।

सृष्ट्वा लोकांस्त्रीनिमान्हव्यवाह; प्राप्ते काले पचसि पुनः समिद्धः सर्वस्यास्य भुवनस्य प्रसूति;स्त्वमेवाग्ने भवसि पुनः प्रतिष्ठा
O bearer of sacrificial offerings! You are the creator of the three worlds. When the time arrives, you kindle them and cook afresh. You are the mother of the entire universe. O Agni! You are the one in whom everything is established again.
हे यज्ञ-प्रसाद के वाहक! आप तीनों लोकों के रचयिता हैं। समय आने पर आप उन्हें जलाकर नये सिरे से पकायें। आप समस्त ब्रह्माण्ड की माता हैं। हे अग्नि! आप ही वह हैं जिसमें सब कुछ फिर से स्थापित हो गया है।
O lord of the universe! You remain inside and digest the food that beings eat. Everything is established in you and you are always cooking and always expanding."
हे ब्रह्मांड के स्वामी! आप अंदर ही रहते हैं और प्राणियों द्वारा खाए गए भोजन को पचाते हैं। सब कुछ आपमें स्थापित है और आप हमेशा खाना पका रहे हैं और हमेशा विस्तार कर रहे हैं।"
Droṇa said: "O Jātaveda! You are the sun with its rays. You suck up the water from the earth and the juices that are born in the ground. O Śukra! You take them all and return them again in the form of rain when it is time and cause everything to grow.
द्रोण ने कहा: "हे जातवेद! आप अपनी किरणों के साथ सूर्य हैं। आप पृथ्वी से पानी और जमीन में पैदा होने वाले रस को चूसते हैं। हे शुक्र! आप उन सभी को ले लेते हैं और समय आने पर बारिश के रूप में उन्हें फिर से लौटा देते हैं और सब कुछ बढ़ने का कारण बनते हैं।
O Śukra! It is from you that the verdant creepers grow again. The ponds, the seas and the giant oceans are born.
हे शुक्र! तुझसे ही हरी-भरी लताएँ फिर उगती हैं। तालाबों, समुद्रों और विशाल महासागरों का जन्म होता है।
O you whose rays are piercing! We are always dependent on Vāruṇa. Be benevolent and be our protector. Do not destroy us today.
हे तुम जिनकी किरणें भेद रही हैं! हम सदैव वरुण पर निर्भर रहते हैं। परोपकारी बनो और हमारे रक्षक बनो। आज हमें नष्ट मत करो.
O fire! Your eyes have the colour of copper. Your neck is red and your trail is black. Save us, like the houses on the shores of the ocean."
हे अग्नि! आपकी आंखों का रंग तांबे जैसा है. तुम्हारी गर्दन लाल है और तुम्हारा निशान काला है। हमें समुद्र के किनारे के घरों की तरह बचा लो।"
Vaiśampāyana said: When he had been thus addressed by Droṇa of the unsullied deeds, Jātaveda spoke to Droṇa, remembering the promise he had made to Mandapāla. Agni said,
वैशम्पायन ने कहा: जब द्रोण ने उसे निष्कलंक कर्मों के बारे में इस प्रकार संबोधित किया, तो जातवेद ने मंदपाल को दिए गए वादे को याद करते हुए द्रोण से बात की। अग्नि ने कहा,

ऋषिर्द्रोणस्त्वमसि वै ब्रह्मैतद्व्याहृतं त्वया ईप्सितं ते करिष्यामि न च ते विद्यते भयम्
"O Droṇa! You are a riṣi. What you have uttered is the Brāhman. I will do what you desire and you have nothing to fear.
"हे द्रोण! आप एक ऋषि हैं। आपने जो कहा है वह ब्रह्म है। मैं वही करूँगा जो आप चाहते हैं और आपको डरने की कोई बात नहीं है।
Mandapāla had mentioned all this to me earlier and had asked me to spare his sons when I consumed the forest.
मण्डपाल ने पहले ही मुझे यह सब बताया था और मुझसे कहा था कि जब मैं जंगल खाऊँगा तो उसके पुत्रों को छोड़ दूँ।

यच्च तद्वचनं तस्य त्वया यच्चेह भाषितम् उभयं मे गरीयस्तद्ब्रूहि किं करवाणि ते भृशं प्रीतोऽस्मि भद्रं ते ब्रह्मन्स्तोत्रेण ते विभो
The word that I gave him and the words that you have just spoken are both of great importance. Therefore, tell me what I should do. O fortunate one! O brāhmaṇa! O illustrious one! I am extremely pleased with your praise."
जो वचन मैंने उसे दिया और जो वचन तुमने अभी कहा, दोनों ही बहुत महत्वपूर्ण हैं। अत: आप ही बतायें कि मुझे क्या करना चाहिये। हे भाग्यवान! हे ब्राह्मण! हे महामहिम! मैं तुम्हारी प्रशंसा से अत्यंत प्रसन्न हूं।”
Droṇa replied: "O Śukra! These cats cause us trouble all the time. O bearer of sacrificial offerings! Place them and all their relatives between your teeth."
द्रोण ने उत्तर दिया: "हे शुक्र! ये बिल्लियाँ हमें हर समय परेशान करती हैं। हे यज्ञ-हवन के वाहक! उन्हें और उनके सभी रिश्तेदारों को अपने दांतों के बीच रखें।"
Vaiśampāyana said: O Janamejaya! After granting leave to the Śārṅgaka-s, Agni acted accordingly. Blazing up, he consumed the Khāṇḍava forest.
वैशम्पायन ने कहा: हे जनमेजय! शारंगकों को छुट्टी देने के बाद, अग्नि ने तदनुसार कार्य किया। उसने प्रज्वलित होकर खाण्डव वन को भस्म कर दिया।
